A Turkish Airlines (THY) plane carrying 13 Turkish survivors of the Asia
tsunamis returned to Istanbul on Tuesday evening, the semi-official Anatolia
News Agency reported. The passengers were brought by an Airbus A-340 jet,
which landed at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. Ankara sent the plane on Monday
to the Maldives to bring back Turks stranded in the region. Forty-one Turkish
citizens are still missing after Sunday morning's earthquake in southern
Asia. Turkish authorities are looking for 18 Turkish citizens in Thailand,
six in Malaysia, six in India, three in Myanmar, three in Sri Lanka, two in
Maldives, two in Singapore, and one in Indonesia, who have been reported
missing. The earthquake, measuring 8.7 on the Richter Scale, triggered
devastating tsunamis, or tidal waves, in south and southeast Asia. At least
50,000 people in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Maldives, Thailand and
Malaysia have been killed in the disaster.
