Five Portuguese were missing and 10 others are hospitalized in Thailand after
the tsunami disaster in southern Asia, the Portuguese Foreign Ministry said
Tuesday. About 210 Portuguese were affected by the tidal waves, and 168 of
them have been found, the ministry said. Portuguese Foreign Minister Antonio
Monteiro said the Portuguese nationals were confirmed in the affected countries
through the "names provided by themselves, local authorities, travel agencies
and, above all, family members." The government has sent officials to
Thailand where the majority of the Portuguese were affected to provide
assistance, said Monteiro. A plane hired by the Portuguese authorities will
leave Wednesday for Sri Lanka with a medial team and humanitarian relief,
Monteiro added.
