A plane, chartered by the Spanish government, departed in Madrid Tuesday with
10 tons of humanitarian relief for Sri Lanka following last Sunday's earthquake
and tsunami. The plane is loaded with donations by the autonomous communities
and non-government organizations in Spain. At a press conference at the
Torrejon de Ardoz Air Base in Madrid, Secretary of State for International
Cooperation Leire Pajin said that through this shipment comes the "first stage
of emergency aid requested by Sri Lanka," an island country located south of
India. Pajin said that his government will also arrange a meeting with the
ambassadors of the affected countries to inform them of the tasks carried out by
Spain in response to the catastrophe as well as to gather first-hand information
on the needs.
