Jordan has sent doctors and humanitarian aid to Maldives to assist the
tsunami-hit island, the Jordan Times reported Friday. Two aircraft laden with
medicines, humanitarian aid and a team consisting of 27 doctors and technicians
left the kingdom Thursday night for the Asian country. The aid, valued at
US$300,000, includes 17 tons of relief supplies and a mobile operation room,
medicaments, surgical supplies, foodstuff, tents, blankets and other
equipment. This is the first of a series of relief measures by Jordan to help
victims of the disaster that hit southeast Asia, the report said. Jordan
Hashemite Charity Organization Secretary General Abdul Salam Abbadi said a
humanitarian aid, valued at US$420,000, will be sent on Friday to Indonesia, Sri
Lanka and Thailand. More than 120,000 people have been killed in powerful
tsunamis, triggered by an underwater earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter
scale north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Dec. 26.
