The German government on Monday rejected reports that 3,200 Germans were
missing in the Indian Ocean tsunami catastrophe.
"There are clearly more than 1,000 missing. All other figures are
speculation," said government spokesman Thomas Steg.
The German newspaper Die Welt quoted government sources as saying that the
numbers of German tourists missing in the catastrophe could be 3,200.
The foreign ministry on Monday put the missing number of Germans at "well
over 1,000." "It has been a week now, and we mustface the fact that these
unfortunate people are very likely lost,"Klaus Scharioth, state secretary of the
Foreign Ministry, told a press conference.
The Ministry has confirmed so far that German death toll from the Dec.26
tsunami catastrophe in southern Asia was 60.
