More than a week after Asia's deadly tsunami, Sweden has revised the number
of dead and missing Swedish, according to Radio Sweden on Monday.
The number of Swedes who have been officially declared dead has been lowered
to 52, while the number of missing has been lowered to 2,915, Radio Sweden
reported.
"The lowered figures are the result of eliminating names that had appeared
twice on different lists, as well as from people contacting the government to
tell them that they or loved ones hadreturned home," Swedish State Secretary for
Foreign Affairs Hans Dahlgren said.
Foreign Ministry officials cautioned that while some names havebeen removed
from the lists, others have been added, so all figures are provisional.
Although the numbers have dropped, Swedish Prime Minister Goeran Persson said
the number of Swedish dead may exceed 1,000, adding that "soon we will face the
next incredibly painful period when those who are no longer alive return home".
14 thousand Swedes who survived the tragedy have now returned home, 130 of
them admitted directly in to Swedish hospitals.
