Singapore will fly its national flag at half-mast on the coming Sunday as a
mark of respect for the victims of the recent tsunami disaster in the Indian
Ocean region.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and
Sports (MCYS) on Tuesday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will attend a memorial
service, which will be heldo n Sunday to remember victims both in Singapore and
across the world.
The statement said that Singapore stands in solidarity with all the countries
that have been grievously affected by the disaster.
On Tuesday afternoon, the second helicopter landing ship, RSS Persistence,
left Singapore for Sumatra's Meulaboh with medical and engineer teams of 196
personnel on board.
Carrying engineering equipment and transport vehicles as well as food and
medical supplies, the dispatch is part of the second phase of Singapore's relief
assistance to Indonesia.
The first helicopter landing ship, RSS Endurance, has arrived off Meulaboh
with a medical team in an effort to set up a field hospital there.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean also
arrived in Medan of Indonesia earlier on Tuesday to see the damage caused by
last week's earthquake and tsunami.
They will visit Banda Aceh and Meulaboh, which are among the worst-hit areas
in the region.
As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, nine Singaporeans have been confirmed dead, 12 others
missing and 30 still unable to be contacted.
