US Secretary of State Colin Powell arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday, Colombo
international airport officials said. Powell is to spend some time in
Colombo, meeting Sri Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga, and is to visit
Tsunami-ravaged areas. His arrival was followed by the arrival of Korean
Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan, officials confirmed. Powell and Hae-Chan are
among a host of foreign dignitaries who have been billed to arrive over the
weekend in Colombo for talks with Sri Lankan leaders on the country's
post-Tsunami rebuilding efforts. Among the other leaders who are to arrive
during the weekend are UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, Britain's Minister for
International Development Hillary Benn and President of the World Bank James D.
Wolfensohn. Director General of the World Health Organization Lee Jong-wook
is also due in the island to take tours on the Tsunami ravaged southern and
northeastern coastal areas. Massive foreign aid is expected to arrive in Sri
Lanka for the rehabilitation and reconstruction in the country's worst natural
disaster. The government says more than 30,000 people were killed with over
800,000 displaced due to the disaster, which took place on Dec. 26, 2004. The
government's main rehabilitation task force said Thursday that there had been
international pledges of assistance worth US$one billion. The country's
Central Bank earlier in the week said 1.3 billion to US$1.5 billion was needed
for the rehabilitation and reconstruction effort.
