9/1/2005 21:38

As international aid continued to pour into tsunami-hit regions, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan reiterated on Sunday that the world donors should offer a immediate cash donation of one billion US dollars.

The UN chief told a press briefing in Sri Lanka's capital of Colombo that the cash aid will be important for the battered areas during the next six months.

"We must reassure them (the world donors) that the money will be used properly and effectively," Annan said.

He, starting the tour in Sri Lanka on Friday, also pledged the UN support for the country's reconstruction process.

The World Bank (WB) President James D. Wolfensohn told reporters Saturday night in Colombo that the bank will support theSri Lankan government in "a fast, transparent and effective way" to assist the tsunami-hit communities to rebuild their homes.

"WB will support the Government as it develops a fast, transparent and effective way to convert the billions of dollars pledged all over the world into the rupee in the hands of the poorfisherman in Sri Lanka to repair his boat or for a community to rebuild its homes," Wolfensohn said.

The bank has reserved about 100 million US dollars for post-Tsunami rebuilding in Sri Lanka from existing projects.

In addition, an emergency credit of not less than 75 million dollars will be made to enable the government to begin recovery work.

As UN and other international organizations put more emphasis on relief, more and more countries join the efforts to help the reconstruction of tsunami-stricken regions.

As one of the tsunami-hit countries, Thailand sent a relief team and 7.5 tones of aid to Indonesia on Sunday.

The Royal Thai Air Force C-130 Hercules cargo plane landed in Banda Aceh's Sultan Iskandar Muda airport with 34 personnel and supplies of rice, canned sardines, instant noodles, clothings and water.

Team leader Lieutenant General Tanongsuk Tuvinun said Thailand had sent aid because its own losses were small compared to Indonesia.

Saudi Arabia has donated more than 110 million US dollars for tsunami-hit countries. According to the latest statistics, Saudi Arabia TV station has got more than 82 million dollars donation from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Saudi Arabian King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz announced earlier that the Saudi government has decided to add its donations to 30 million dollars.
