The Indonesian government has prepared 50 billion rupiah (around 5.6 million
US dollars) in emergency fund to help victims of Sunday's powerful earthquake
andtidal waves that killed over 4,400 people on Sumatra island.
The financial assistance is intended to buy food, finance the burial of those
killed in the disaster and build tents for refugees, State Secretary Yusril Ihza
Mahendra told a press conference here Monday.
He said Vice President Jusuf Kalla has departed to North Sumatra and Aceh to
hand the fund.
Yusril added the government has received offers of humanitarian assistance
from other countries, including China, France, Japan, Malaysia and the United
States.
He said the government estimated the death toll at 4,491 but this doesn't
include casualties from smaller islands in the India Ocean which so far have not
been known due to communication constraints.
Meanwhile, the Aceh provincial government has prepared a three-hectare mass
grave for the victims, reported Detikcom online news service.
Bodies that have been identified will be buried in the mass grave later in
the day, it said.
