The Uganda Red Cross has launched an appeal for aid to support the victims of
the tsunami disaster in Asia where the death toll is feared to be over 115,000,
reported local press on Friday. The appeal was contained in a statement
issued responding to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red
Crescents Societies to raise 50 million Swiss francs (about US$44
million). The statement also said the Uganda Red Cross has set up an
information desk through which people could link up with family, friends and
relatives in the affected area. Early Sunday, an 8.7-magnitude earthquake in
the Indian Ocean sent high waves crashing onto the shores of coastal Indonesia,
India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Maldives and Bangladesh, and
submerged villages and towns.
