The Australian government on Friday announced that Australia will add an
additional US$25 million (US$19.25 million) aid to the tsunami victims, bringing
Australia's aid to US$60 million (US$46.2 million). The extra money will be
used to address the urgent public health threat, Australian Broadcasting
Corporation (ABC) radio reported. US$Twenty million (US$15.4 million) will be
spent sending Australian health workers, sanitation technicians, water supply
and equipment to Indonesia. There is also money for food and shelter and for
helping displaced people. The rest of the funding will go to Sri Lanka and
the Maldives, according to ABC. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer
has warned it could take several months for some of the bodies to be
identified. "It's going to be a very painful and slow process in some cases
unfortunately," Downer was quoted as saying.
