The Zimbabwean government announced on Thursday that a steering committee to
spearhead the country's mobilization of assistance to victims of the December 26
tsunamis would soon be set up. Speaking at a meeting to discuss the way
forward and launch the aid program, Acting President Joyce Mujuru said the
committee would be composed of members of both the public and private
sector. "It has been felt by officials in the Cabinet that we should join our
colleagues elsewhere in assisting victims of the disaster, " Mujuru said. "We
want a committee to take the lead in order that we come up with
something." Some of the organizations that attended the meeting include the
Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries,
Zimbabwe National Water Authority, church organizations and various government
ministries. The acting president assured the Indonesian ambassador to
Zimbabwe on Wednesday that Zimbabwe would send aid to the people of Indonesia,
which was the worst hit by tsunamis. "We are organizing something, once
everything is ready, it will be sent to you," she said. The tsunami swamped
the coasts of Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and the Maldives toward the
end of last month after a massive undersea earthquake measuring 8.7 on the
Richter scale. Other countries also affected by the tsunamis, which left a
trail of death and destruction, are Malaysia and Myanmar. About 150,000
deaths due to the tsunamis have so far been reported, with millions of survivors
left without food and shelter.
