Mexico offers financial aid to tsunami-hit Asian countries
7/1/2005 11:32

Mexican President Vicente Fox has ordered the government to make its first contribution in support of tsunami-hit Asian countries, according to a press statement released by the presidency.
During a meeting with the country's ambassadors and consuls to foreign countries on Thursday, Fox confirmed the financial aid and reiterated the call to "multiply" the tokens of support in view of the magnitude of the tragedy, but he failed to disclose the amount of the financial aid.
"The magnitude of the tragedy obliges us to multiply our generosity," Fox said.
Donation-collecting centers and bank accounts in embassies and non-government organizations have been opened to the public to help the victims of the Dec. 26 Indian Ocean tsunami, which mainly affected South and Southeast Asia, said the president.
He added he believes the companies, foundations and families of the country will help the people of Southeast Asia who are facing the "terrible consequences."
He said the vessels with medical personnel, surgical equipment, medicines and electricity plants, as well as food are standing ready to cope with the emergency situation in the region.
He promised the Mexican government would collaborate with the international community in the reconstruction of the affected zones.
