NZ to contribute expertise in tsunami-hit countries' reconstruction

New Zealand expertise in earthquake engineering will be part of this
country's long-term contribution to reconstruction in Asia's tsunami devastated
areas, Prime Minister Helen Clark said Friday. "We do have real expertise in
New Zealand in the natural hazards cluster. We have world-leading engineering
expertise," she told National Radio. Clark was speaking from Jakarta after
the Indonesian capital hosted a one-day global summit on the tsunami where
billions of dollars in aid was pledged. New Zealand has so far promised 10
million NZ dollars (about US$7 million) to aid the countries hit by the tsunami
on Boxing Day. New Zealand's death toll in the disaster remains at three,
including a woman with dual New Zealand-Canadian citizenship, with 14 other
people missing in Thailand. Inquiries had also been made about another 729
who may have been in the region. Clark said it was a miracle New Zealand's
toll was so small compared to the heavy losses suffered by so many other
countries. A spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Phil Goff said each
passing day raised increasing concerns for the missing, although those numbers
were gradually falling as people were accounted for. "The search will go on
until every person is accounted for," he said.
