Australians donated more than 15 million dollars (11.4 million US dollars)
for the Indian Ocean tsunami victims during a star-studded fund-raising concert
held atthe Sydney Opera House Saturday night.
The pledges came on top of more than 120 million dollars (91.2 million US
dollars) in private and corporate donations made to Australia's aid
organizations.
Thousands of people attended the concert at the steps of the Sydney Opera
House and millions watched the concert on television across the country.
Celebrities manned telephones in Melbourne, capital of Victoria State, to
accept donations for charity World Vision.
At the end of the concert, a total of 15.19 million dollars hadbeen raised
through telephone, website and SMS donations.
Australian government's official financial assistance to tsunami-hit areas,
mostly to Indonesia, has been 1 billion dollars(0.76 billion US dollars), the
biggest donor country to the disaster so far.
