Spain offers military aid for relief mission in Indonesia

Span's foreign minister has been in Indonesia since Wednesday to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for talks on military aid for tsunami-ravaged Aceh, local media reported Thursday.

The Spanish minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, met with Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday and discussed the planned dispatch of a Spanish navy vessel and 650 troops to Indonesia, TheJakarta Post newspaper said.

Forces from a number of countries, including Australia, the United States and Japan have scrambled to help with relief effortsin Aceh, on the northern tip of the Sumatra island, following the Dec. 26 disaster.

More than 106,500 people were killed in Indonesia by an 8.7-magnitude earthquake and ensuing tsunami, with almost all the deaths occurring in Aceh. Around the Indian Ocean the death toll from the disaster stands at more than 158,000.
