An independent commission was set up Thursday to look into the opposition
complaint that said the Swedish government reacted slowly in response to the
Asian tsunami, to which 1,889 swedes fell a victim. The commission, appointed
by the government, was made up of five independent personalities and chaired by
the head of the Stockholm appeals court. In the deadly tsunamis that swept
across the coastal countries in the Indian Ocean rim on Dec. 26, 52 swedes have
been confirmed dead, 637 are missing and 1,200 are unaccounted for. The
opposition had complained the government reacted slowly despite urgent messages
from Sweden's ambassador to Thailand and demanded an investigation into the
government's possible negligence.
