Four hundred million euros (522 million US dollars) in private donations in
Germany have been raised over the past three weeks for the Asian tsunami
victims, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder told a press conference Monday.
In addition, the German government would offer an additional 500 million
euros to the tsunami-hit Asian nations, where more than 168,000 have lost their
lives in the disaster, Schroeder said.
Michael Schumacher was among the top donation contributors, donating 7.5
million euros.
Scores of countries in the world have offered aid to the South and Southeast
Asian nations since Dec. 26 when the deadly tsunamisswept across the coastal
countries in the Indian Ocean rim.
The US private donations reached 350 million dollars, Australia's at least
118 million dollars and Britain's at least 190 milliondollars.
