The Chilean government on Friday handed over to the United Nations Children's
Fund (UNICEF) a donation of US$1 million for victims of the Asian
tsunamis. The government collected the money during an "Asia-Chile" campaign.
It had opened an account in the State Bank to receive funds. The donations also
included money collected at a concert last week. Scores of countries in the
world have offered aid to the South and Southeast Asian nations since Dec. 26
when deadly tsunamis swept across the coastal countries in the Indian Ocean rim.
Over 225,000 people have lost their lives in the tidal waves. International
aid and donations are pouring into the affected countries for their
reconstruction.
