A second Malaysian police team left for Aceh Sunday to help in disaster
relief work in the tsunami-ravaged Indonesian province.
It comprises 125 members and will replace the first police teamof an equal
number, which has been there for 15 days, Deputy Inspector-General of Police
Musa Hassan told reporters after sending off the team at the air force base in
Subang near here.
He said the second team is made up of members of the General Operations
Force's 2nd and 5th Battalions, Commando Unit 69, Federal Reserve Unit, and 30
medical and four forensic personnel.
They will be in Aceh for 15 days to help the Indonesian police in search and
rescue operations and to bury victims of the Dec. 26giant waves that pounded
Aceh and northern Sumatra, killing more than 160,000 people, Musa said. A third
police team might be sent to Aceh if needed, he added.
The first Malaysian police team was sent to Aceh for relief work on Jan. 8,
which is scheduled to return home later Sunday.
Malaysia, which was also hit by Dec. 26 tsunami, has also donated some 15
million ringgit (3.94 million US dollars) to the tsunami-stricken areas of
Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Enditem
