Eight Filipinos were feared dead, while one was reported missing and four
were injured after a tsunami slammed into Phuket, Thailand, on Sunday, the
Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday. The injured Filipinos
were confined at local hospitals in Phuket, said Gilbert Asuque, the foreign
affairs department spokesman, quoting Ambassador Antonio Rodriguez in
Thailand. Asuque said they will disclose the identities of the injured once
their relatives have been informed. Meanwhile, the department said it is
still confirming the nationalities of eight male fatalities with
Filipino-sounding names, while checking with the passport division of
Thailand. He also confirmed a Filipina was reported missing in Phuket. She is
the mother of one of those injured. Asuque said they will update the public
on the matter later Tuesday as soon as further information is
obtained. Sunday's undersea earthquake of epic power near Indonesian island
of Sumatra sent huge deadly walls of water crashing down on beaches in eight
countries, reportedly killing more than 25,000 people.
