Some 100 German tourists are still missing in disaster region two days after
the tsunamis in Asia, foreign minister Joschka Fischer said in Berlin on
Tuesday. Some travel agencies still can't build contacts with hundreds of
tourists, Fischer said at a press conference. He said the number of Germans
who are missing could be "three- digital." The German government won't give
details on possible deaths among German tourists until the information from the
catastrophe regions is confirmed, he noted. It was a "catastrophe of
century," Fischer said, adding: "There is cause for great fears." An
identification team of the Federal Criminal Bureau has been sent to the Khao Lak
region in Thailand for investigation of victims, said the minister. In Khao
Lak, the Sofitel Magic Lagoon Resort that is much visited by Germans has been
totally ravaged, the AFP news agency reported. The Thai Interior Ministry
estimated some 700 foreign tourists were killed in the region.
