Death toll in Indonesia reaches nearly 80,000: health official

The death toll from the Sunday's powerful 8.7-degree earthquake and the
tsunami has reached 79,940 up to present, an official from the Indonesian
Ministry of Health said here Thursday.
The official named only as Anang told Xinhua through telephone that the death
toll could be increased as massive rescue working has been still going on and
more bodies found from debris.
Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla predicted on Wednesday inJakarta that
the death toll from the powerful earthquake and tidalwaves could go up to
between 40,000 to 50,000 in Indonesia as thousands of residents in the affected
areas were still missing.
