Sunday's Tsunami ravaged 2,260 km of India's coastline, with waves
penetrating some 3 km of mainland, rising up to 3 meters and destroying or
damaging 34,058 homes, the Indo-Asian News Service quoted official data as
saying Thursday.
The data pertains to Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and
excludes Andaman and Nicobar Islands that has been extensively damaged with
5,900 persons reported missing or feared dead in the region, the data said.
Compiled by the National Disaster Management Division of the home ministry,
the data said that in southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu the waves reached a
height of 7-10 meters, penetrated 1-1.5 km into mainland, and affected 25,043
houses and 258 villages.
In union territory Pondicherry, located in south India, the waves, which
reached up to 10 meters in height, penetrated between300 meters and 3 km into
mainland, enveloping 6,403 houses and 26 villages.
In Andhra Pradesh state in southeast India, the waves averaged 5 meters in
height, penetrated between 500 meters and 2 km into mainland. A total of 1,557
houses in 301 villages were destroyed or damaged.
In southern Indian state of Kerala the waves rose up to three or five meters,
penetrated between 1-2 km into mainland, damaging or destroying 1.055 houses.
