A suspected suicide car bomb detonated Tuesday outside the command post of
special Iraqi forces in western Baghdad, killing at least ten people and
wounding 50 others, police said. The explosion occurred in the al-Qadisiya
district, not far from another suicide car explosion that shocked the
headquarters of Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's party on Monday, police
said. Some witnesses said the detonated vehicle was a fuel truck. US and
Iraqi forces cordoned off the area shortly after the blast early Tuesday, which
went off at about 8:45 a.m. (0545 GMT). After the blast, thick white smoke
rose skyward, witnesses said. According to the police, Tuesday's suicide
bomber aimed at the Iraqi soldiers in the checkpoint leading to the Green Zone
apparently, where the guards have been repeatedly targeted by insurgents since
last year.
