A British soldier has pleaded guilty to one count of beating an Iraqi prisoner, but with two other defendants, pleaded not guilty to all other charges.

This is as their court-martial got underway on allegations of mistreatment.

Photographs published in a newspaper in 2003 led to investigations against the three men.

This is the first case of alleged abuse of Iraqis by British soldiers to go to trial.

The court-martial, being held in Germany, released images on Tuesday that apparently show British troops forcing Iraqi detainees to simulate sex acts.

Meanwhile, in London, General Mike Jackson, has promised to respond more fully once a verdict is passed. Enditem
