Insurgents attacked the building of the Independent High Elections Committee
in Saddam's hometown of Tikrit on Wednesday night, police said Thursday.
"Three rocket-propelled grenades hit the building and caused some damages.
The attack also injured two citizens in a nearby house," Colonel Hassan Ahmed, a
police officer, told Xinhua.
"Meanwhile, another rocket-propelled grenade hit Tikrit police station,"
Hassan added.
In addition, three voting centers in or around Tikrit were attacked by
insurgents Wednesday night as the parliamentary elections were only four days
away.
Also in Tikrit, an Iraqi interpreter working with the US troops was killed on
Thursday morning, according to the police.
The interpreter named Hashim Hummad Muhammed was killed at about 9 a.m. (0600
GMT) when an explosive improvised device detonated close to his BMW car in a
street in central Tikrit.
Three policemen who were passing by the scene of the blast were wounded, the
police said.
Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, has witnessed a surge in violence as
insurgents were bent on derailing the first national elections since the ouster
of Saddam Hussein.
