One US marine was killed in action in the flashpoint Anbar province west of Baghdad. The US military said Monday.

The killed marine, assigned to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, was killed while conducted security operations on Sunday, the military said in a statement.

It did not give further details saying "the release of more details about the incident could place our personnel at greater risk."

Over, 1,400 US service members have been killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion in March 2003.
