The United Iraqi Alliance, a main Shiite coalition, leads in the vote count
after the parliamentary elections, the Independent Election Commission of Iraq
(IECI) announced Friday.
The alliance, supported by Iraq's top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali
Sistani, had garnered 2.212 million votes out of the3.3 million counted so far,
which made up 35 percent of the votes,said Abdul Hussein al-Hendawi, head of the
IECI.
The list of interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi remained second with 579,000
votes, Hendawi told reports at a news briefing.
Sunday's polls were the first in Iraq for more than 50 years, which would
choose a 275-member national assembly.
The final results are expected to be announced next week.
