Final results of Iraqi polls to be announced within five days

The final results of Iraq's elections will be announced within five days, the electoral commission said Saturday.

"We will announce the final results on the 9th or 10th of February," the commission's spokesman Farid Ayar told reporters at a press conference.

"These final results will take a period of nine days to let the political parties to appeal," Ayar said, adding, "the commission council will convene after that to approve the results."

Adel al-Lami, member of the commission council, said the commission had received 120 appeals outside Iraq in addition to 100inside the country.

The commission was investigating these appeals, he added.

On Friday, the commission said partial results indicated the Iraqi United Alliance, which was backed by top Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, had garnered 2.212 million votes out of 3.3 million votes counted.

The list headed by interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi was in thesecond place with 579,000 votes in the partial count, it added.
