Badie Arief Izzat, lawyer of former Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz,
told Xinhua on Wednesday that he would defend Huda Salih Mehdi Ammash, or better
known as "doctor anthrax". "This afternoon I received an official proxy
issued by the notary public in Adhamyiah, in which Mr. Ahmed Makky Saeed, her
husband, authorized me to represent his wife in front of the Iraqi special
court," the lawyer said. "Her husband contacted me when I demanded her
release due to her deteriorating health condition," Izzat said, adding that he
would start performing his duties and try to secure the release of his
client. The lawyer said his client, Tariq Aziz, told him last December that
Ammash has cancer and needs special medical attention. Huda Mehdi Ammash was
arrested in May 2003 and was on a 55- member list of the most wanted Iraqi
officials by the United States. The Americans called her "doctor anthrax"
because she has a PhD degree in the science of germs and is considered
responsible for developing germ weapons under the former Iraqi regime. She is
now detained with other members of the former Iraqi leadership in one of the
detention centers.
