A suicide bomber disguised as police officer blew up his vehicle on
Thursday after driving into the police headquarters in the Iraqi city of Tikrit,
killing 10 policemen and wounding 35 others, police and medical sources said.
"A suicide bomber wearing a police officer uniform managed to penetrate the
police headquarters, then he detonated his car when the policemen were gathering
in the morning," Colonel hassan Ahmed from Salahudin police told Xinhua.
"We received 10 bodies and 22 wounded in our hospital, but the number of
casualties could increase," Doctor Imad al-Jubouri told Xinhua at Tikrit
Hospital, adding that the victims were all policemen.
Many cars were set on fire after the massive blast and remains of human flesh
scattered far away in the area, Ahmed said, adding that several buildings were
badly damaged.
Several ambulances raced to the site, ferrying the wounded to Tikrit
hospital. US troops sealed off the scene immediately after the blast.
Tikrit, the hometown of the deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, is
located some 170 km north of Baghdad.
Insurgents fighting US troops frequently target members of Iraq's fledgling
security forces, whom they call collaborators.
