Demonstrating continues in Beirut
2/3/2005 11:42

Protesters continue to mass in central Beirut to demand Syria quit Lebanon. This comes as officials start a complicated search for a new Prime Minister, after two weeks of unprecedented protests forced Prime Minister Omar Karami and his cabinet to step down on Monday.

A day after the Lebanese government resigned, there's no sign the demonstrations will end soon.

In Beirut, protesters have vowed to continue until Syrian troops leave the country.

Elsewhere in Lebanon, shops, businesses and banks reopened after Monday's one-day strike to protest the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri£¬who was killed in a car bomb last month.

Meanwhile on Tuesday, a UN team investigating Hariri's death met Lebanese President Emile Lahoud. According to a presidential statement, Lahoud told the team members "the truth is the basic goal".

President Lahoud and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri are discussing the prospects of a new government. Lahoud is set to call for consultations this week with parliamentary deputies£¬in a bid to choose a successor for Karami.
