Karami to Step down if Fails to Form Cabinet
24/3/2005 8:14

Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Omar Karami says he will tender his resignation again if he fails to form a national unity government.

He said this after holding talks with President Emile Lahoud on Wednesday in Beirut.

Karami said he had held close consultations with political parties and religious groups about the forming of a new cabinet and achieved positive results.

But he hasn't received replies from some key figures, including Lebanese opposition leader Walid Jumblatt.

He also said the new government should take responsibility for investigating the killing of former Premier Rafik Hariri, carrying out the Taif Accord and supervising parliamentary elections, due to be held in May.

Meanwhile, he stressed all parties should stop holding demonstrations and hold talks as soon as possible.
