Syria, Iran highlight importance of preserving Lebanon's stability
3/4/2005 7:47

Syria and Iran underlined on Saturday the importance of preserving security, stability and peace in Lebanon, the official SANA news agency reported.
Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi and his Syrian counterpart Farouk al-Shara said during their meeting the Lebanese national unity and non-intervention in its affairs are necessary for the Lebanese to overcome the current crisis.
The assassination of former Lebanese premier Rafik al-Hariri was a painful event for both Syria and Lebanon, Kharazi told reporters after the meeting.
Syria and Lebanon should take "wise measures" to deal with the worrying situation, Kharazi noted, while pointing the finger at those who seek to reach their aims at the expense of Lebanon's interest.
He also called on the Lebanese leadership to try to preserve national unity and peace which was achieved after a long civil war.
The pro-Syrian Prime Minister Omar Karami, who resigned on Feb. 28 over opposition protest at the killing of Hariri on Feb. 14 in a car bomb blast, has failed to form a national unity government since he was re-appointed as premier on March 10.
Apart from the political turmoils in Lebanon, Syria has been under mounting pressure to implement the UN resolution 1559 calling for it to quit Lebanon.
Shara pledged in a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Tuesday to fully withdraw Syrian troops from Lebanon before the Lebanese parliamentary elections in May.
Syria has finished the first stage of a two-phase withdrawal by the end of March, with nearly half of the 14,000 troops pulling out of Lebanon and the rest pulling back to east Lebanon's Bekaa Valley.
The Syrian-Lebanese military committee is scheduled to meet on April 7 to work out the timetable for a final withdrawal.
SANA said Shara and Kharazi exchanged views during their talks on the current developments on both regional and international arenas and their viewpoints were "identical regarding the raised issues."
