Israel asks Syria to pull out of Lebanon
8/3/2005 7:49

Israel asks the Syrian government to fully withdraw its troops from Lebanon, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said Monday at UN headquarters in New York, after meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Shalom told reporters that he and the secretary has discussed many issues including the implementation of the resolution 1559, which asked Syria to pull out of Lebanon, the peace process with Palestine, and the importance of normalization with more Arab and Islamic countries.

He demanded that Syria fully withdraw its troops from Lebanon, saying "partial withdrawal" is not enough.

"We believe the time has come not only for full implementation of the Security Council Resolution 1559 that called Syrian to put an end to the occupation in Lebanon, but for the disarmament of militia groups," said Shalom.
