The United States opposes any suggestion that Lebanese parliamentary
elections scheduled for Maybe postponed because of continuing political turmoil
in Lebanon, Deputy State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said Tuesday.
"We don't see reason or justification for delaying them," Ereli said at a
news briefing. "Obviously, we think it's important that elections take place
when they're supposed to take place, which is before the end of May."
"It is our intent to work with the government of Lebanon and the
international community, including the UN, to do everything possible to help the
Lebanese have elections in the time frame that is provided for," Ereli said.
The US, together with the United Nations, have stepped up pressure on Syria
to get out of Lebanon before legislative elections, expected to be held before
the legislature's current term expired at the end of May.
Washington says Syria must withdraw all its forces -- both military and
intelligence -- before a vote to ensure it is fair.
Syria was forced to start withdrawing its forces under popular Lebanese
protests and US-led pressure after Hariri's death. About 6,000 troops have
already gone, leaving some 8,000 that are expected to leave before May.
