An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale rocked Bengkulu, the capital city of Indonesia's Bengkulu province, at 5:15 a.m. on Friday, a spokesman said.
The epicenter of the earthquake was at 3.86 degrees south latitude and 102.4 degrees east longitude, Jakarta meteorological and geophysical agency's spokesman Edi S said.
The epicenter was located 23 km east of Bengkulu city and 15 km below the earth, he said.
The tremor surprised residents following reports that earthquake's epicenter continued to move southward, according to the official Antara news agency.
Local people suffered a lot from a very powerful earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale on Dec. 26 last year that devastated western part of Aceh province and caused deadly tsunami. At least 230,000 people either killed or missing in the quake and the tsunami.
Another earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale rocked Nias district, North Sumatra province and little south of Aceh, on March 28, killing over 500 people.
There has been no reports over the casualty and material loss in the latest earthquake in Bengkulu, south of Nias district.
A series of aftershocks have taken place around Bengkulu following a powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale that jolted the province on June 4, 2000, killing 94 people and injured hundred others.
