There is no threat of tsunami following the strong earthquake late Monday, said a Thai official early Tuesday.

No tsunami has been reported three hours after the earthquake occurred, Chalarmchai Aekkantrong, deputy director of Thailand's meteorological department, was quoted by the Traffic Radio Station as saying.

This means people can drop alert for possible tsunami hit and go back to their normal life, said Chalarmchai.

In the wake of the earthquake, Thailand ordered evacuation along its six southern coastal provinces as a precaution against any possible tsunami.

The six provinces were all hit by the tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake on Dec. 26 late last year and critics blamed the government for failing to issue timing alert.

Chalarmchai assured people there is no more tsunami hit and asked them not to panic over tsunami rumors.

An earthquake occurred in Indonesia's Sumatra Island around 23:00 pm on Monday night. The strong seism was felt in southern Thailand.

The tremor was also felt in the capital Bangkok, which lies more than 1,000 kilometers away from the center of earthquake. People living in Bangkok's high-rises reported sway of building lasting for some five minutes.
