Global Rescue Efforts for Indonesian Quake

Indonesia and the international community have provided emergency rescue and
relief supplies in response to the heavy earthquake that hit west coast of
Indonesia late Monday.
The Indonesian rescue team arrived on the
devastated Nias Island Tuesday and the country's National Guard sent soldiers,
warships and helicopters to help with rescue work.
Indonesian President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has postponed his visit to Australia and will go to the
disaster- hit area to direct and coordinate the rescue efforts.
The
United Nations have also sent a rescue team to the area. The World Health
Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the UN World Food Program and
the International Red Cross have all provided rescue teams or material aid.
The Red Cross Society of China has decided to allocate 300,000 US
dollars and the Red Cross Society in Macao has provided 250,000 Macao Patacas to
Indonesia.
The United States, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand have also
pledged assistance.
By Tuesday night, at least 430 people were reported
killed in the earthquake , 320 of which died on Nias Island.
