Indonesia reports two more bird flu deaths
17/11/2005 21:08

Indonesia reported two death from bird flu confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) affiliated laboratory in Hong Kong, bringing the total to seven, Health Ministry said Thursday.

A 20-year-old woman who died last weekend and a 16-year-old girl who died last week, both died in Indonesia's capital of Jakarta, said Hariadi Wibisono, a director at the ministry.

"We received the result of the test Wednesday evening and the results are positive for bird flu," he told Xinhua by telephone.

The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain is endemic in poultry in parts of Asia, which has killed over 66 people.

Experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among humans, just like human influenza. If it does, millions could die because they would have no immunity.

The European Union has asked Indonesia to intensify efforts to fight against the H5N1 deadly virus.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has made fighting bird flu one of the government's top priorities.
