Romania has confirmed its sixth case of bird flu in eastern county of Braila
near the Danube Delta, according to TV report late Saturday.
Preliminary tests on a dead chicken showed it was killed by theH5 type of
avian flu in the small village of Scarlatesti in Braila county.
Romanian Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur has ordered quarantine in the
village and said the bird flu virus was probably brought in by migratory birds
as the village is surrounded by lakes.
Since Romania detected its first case of bird flu on Oct. 7 in the delta
village of Ceamurlia de Jos, the country has confirmed six cases of H5 strain
infections in or near Danube Delta. Three of the infections were caused by the
H5N1 virus.
Romania is the first European country to have detected the deadly H5N1 virus
in poultry. So far it has not reported any human case of bird flu.
