A man has died in the Indonesian province of Central Java after developing bird flu symptoms, local reports said Thursday.
If it is confirmed, the latest death would bring total fatalities caused by the bird flu to 12 in the country.
The 48-year-old man, whose identity is not disclosed, died recently after just 10 hours under intensive treatment at a local hospital in the town of Magelang, some 500 km east of Jakarta, reported the Antara news agency.
A local health official was quoted as saying that the man suffered high fever and respiratory problems when he was admitted to the hospital.
"The symptoms similar to bird flu," Magelang health office chief Dr. Nurul Safariah said, adding, "the blood sample of the man has been sent to Jakarta to be forwarded to WHO-affiliated laboratory in Hong Kong."
Besides the confirmed 11 bird flu fatalities so far, Indonesia has 16 bird flu patients of mostly Jakarta residents.
