Indonesia local test on Wednesday showed a 35-year old woman positively
contracted by Avian Influenza virus, bringing the total person affected by the
disease to 17, a health senior official told Xinhua.
A Director at the Health Ministry Hariadi Wibisono told Xinhua in telephone
that the blood sample of the woman with initial "S" has been sent to the World
Health Organization (WHO) affiliated laboratory in Hong Kong for further test.
The WHO has confirmed 11 of the 16 people contracted by the disease have died
in Indonesia, he said, adding that the woman has been hospitalized at a designed
bird flu hospital of Sulianti Suroso in Jakarta since two days ago after she was
treated in a hospital in East Jakarta.
"The result of local test was positive this afternoon," he said, adding, "It
is unclear if she had contact with dead chickens."
The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain is endemic in poultry in some parts of
Asia, which killed more than 70 people.
