The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that a 13-year-old girl and
her 4-year-old younger brother from Indonesia died of avian influenza, health
officials said Saturday.
A WHO-sanctioned laboratory in Hong Kong said that the two siblings were
tested positive of bird flu, director of animal-borne disease eradication
Hariadi Wibisono told Xinhua.
WHO has so far confirmed 14 deaths of bird flu in Indonesia, hesaid.
The two died last week at the Hasan Sadikin hospital in the West Java capital
of Bandung.
They showed strong indications of developing bird flu symptoms during in
hospital. Local tests have earlier shown they had bird flu, said Dr. Ilham Patu
at the government-appointed bird flu hospital Sulianti Saroso in
Jakarta.
