Low-grade bird flu kills 200 chickens in Seoul: ministry

A mild form of avian influenza broke out on a chicken farm in south of
Seoul, killing 200 chickens, South Korean agriculture ministry said
today.
The ministry said the low-grade strain of bird flu virus was
discovered on the farm in Pyeongtaek, about 70 km south of the capital, after
200 chickens died in three days starting Tuesday.
Tests showed the virus was
"low pathogenic" and it has little chance of being transmitted to humans, the
ministry said.
The new case of bird flu in the country was confirmed one day
after the ministry announced that it detected a possibly virus strain of bird
flu in Iksan, about 230 km south of Seoul, where 6, 000 out of a total of 13,000
chicken have died suddenly since Sunday.
The bird flu virus H5N1 has killed
more than 140 people so far worldwide, mostly in Asia.
