Cote d'Ivoire says isolated case not to cause bird flu outbreak
24/11/2006 15:19

An isolated case of bird flu earlier this month in Cote d'Ivoire's economic capital Abidjan would not cause an outbreak of the epidemic, a disease control official said Thursday.
Test results showed that the two turkeys from a village on the outskirts of Abidjan were infected with the H5N1 virus but the situation had been put under control and an outbreak would not happen, said Kanga Kouame, a Ministry of Livestocks and Marine Resources official responsible for bird flu prevention and control.
Health and sanitary measures have been put in place and people exposed to the birds are under medical supervision, said the official.
Cote d'Ivoire's government announced in early September the end of a ban on poultry imports that it imposed in May after bird flu was discovered near Abidjan.
