The Swiss authorities on Wednesday confirmed the country's first case of the
highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 avian flu. Test results from the EU's
reference laboratory in Weybridge, England showed that a wild duck found a week
ago by Lake Geneva did die of the H5N1 strain, the Federal Veterinary Office
said. A second case of the broad H5 virus was reported earlier Wednesday on
the banks of Lake Constance, which lies in east Switzerland near the border of
Germany. Final test results on the precise strain of this case of the virus
will not come out until next week, the office said.
