The first case of H5N1 bird flu has been confirmed in two dead swans in
Poland, the Polish PAP news agency reported on Monday.
Jan Zmudzinksi, a professor of the state Veterinary Institute, was quoted by
the Polish PAP as saying that "we have confirmed it was H5N1 strain, and the
molecular biology tests specific for H5 and N1 were positive."
The Samples will be sent to Britain for further examination with the results
expected by mid-week.
The swans were found dead on the bank of the River Vistula in the northern
city of Torun.
Concerns have been growing in Warsaw over bird flu following the detection of
several cases of the virus in neighboring Germany last month.
